Evanscorp was invited to speak to high school students, undergraduates and their parents about the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) industry during this years ICT Careers Week information session organized by the University of Wollongong's Faculty of Informatics.
The theme for National ICT Careers Week was 'Start Here, Go Anywhere', promoting the industry as a rewarding, interesting and social career which can take people anywhere in the world. As part of the week's activities, the Faculty of Informatics held an information evening promoting the ICT industry focusing on the theme "ICT and GFC - Threat or Opportunity".
A panel of local industry practitioners including our own Managing Director, Phil Evans, made themselves available in an open floor question and answer session to discuss some of the benefits and challenges of working in ICT as well as the impact that the Global Financial Crisis has had on local ICT businesses.
"There is no doubting that the Global Financial Crisis has had a negative impact on many businesses", Evanscorp included. "Despite this, we have still managed to increase our staff numbers by 50% since the last ICT careers night just one year ago. Some great companies have grown out of the economic upturn following a depression or recession. Google, Microsoft, and PayPal all grew out of economic downturns. Australia is well placed to come out of the GFC strongly. Now is our time," Phil said during the panel session.
Promoting and participating in community activities, particularly those with an ICT aspect, is something Evanscorp is eager to do, as participation in these events allows students to gain a better understanding of the variety of opportunities available within the ICT industry, and particularly in the local community.
