Evanscorp helps SCARF program to get on the road

22 July 2009

Local charity, Strategic Community Assistance to Refugee Families (SCARF Inc) launched a new program to help refugee learner drivers secure their Provisional Licence. Sharyn Mackenzie the Coordinator of SCARF said, "learning to drive is a key priority for newly arrived refugees as it gives family members access to work, sport and a wider range of community activities."

The L2P program will assist learners, with the support of a SCARF driving mentor, to achieve the 120 hours of supervised driving the RTA require for a Provisional Licence. Ted Booth, the Program Manager of the SCARF L2P program said "SCARF funds a starter program of 5 lessons with a professional driving school for refugee community members who have passed the Learner Licence test. The learners are then expected to pay for 15 professional lessons before joining the L2P mentor program."

Evanscorp worked with SCARF to set up the online booking system to be used to book time in the SCARF car with a mentor. Phil Evans, the Managing Director of Evanscorp said "the booking system makes it easy for learners to book time in the SCARF vehicle, and for mentors to publicise their availability. We think this is a great initiative and we were happy to be able to support the L2P programme in this way."

Illawarra Toyota have also helped by covering the cost of the vehicle and provide servicing support.
